Nmblr Beacon Step 3: Strategic Problem

Purpose of this step: To clearly articulate, in customer terms, the main barrier or challenge that stands in the way of achieving your winning aspiration. This step reframes obstacles from the stakeholder’s perspective, not your own.

Instructions

  • Refer to the finalised Winning Aspiration - this provides the context for the strategic problem.
  • All participants to contribute images or written thoughts (post-it notes) describing what might prevent the team from achieving the winning aspiration, focusing on customer/stakeholder challenges.
  • Framing problems from the customer’s viewpoint is encouraged. For example, instead of stating, 'the safety profile is problematic', reframe as, 'it requires too much time to educate patients about managing side effects'.
  • Similar issues and themes should be grouped together.
  • Contributors should explain their points, and others can add missing perspectives or clarify as needed.
  • During or after the discussion, the lead or facilitator should draft a summary that captures the essence of the strategic problem, focusing on the biggest barriers from the customer’s perspective.
  • This summary should be refined with team input until there is consensus.
  • The strategic problem, once finalised, needs to be captured in the designated area.
